Care + Maintenance

Care + Maintenance

A guide on how to take care of your rug.

Woven with history and tradition, our rugs are designed to stand the test of time. To maintain their beauty and extend their lifespan, follow these care recommendations.

Vacuuming

To keep your rug in excellent condition, regular cleaning, proper protection, and occasional deep cleaning are essential. Vacuuming at least once a week removes dirt and dust, but delicate rugs, such as wool, silk, or antiques, should be vacuumed with suction-only settings to prevent damage.

Spillages

Blot (don't rub) the spill immediately with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel to absorb as much liquid as possible. - Water-based spills: Use mild dish soap mixed with water. - Oil-based spills: Apply baking soda or cornstarch to absorb the oil, then vacuum before spot-cleaning. - Pet stains or strong odors: Use a vinegar-water solution (1:1) and sprinkle baking soda to neutralize odors. If the stain persists, consider professional rug cleaning, especially for delicate rugs like silk rugs.

Shedding

Shedding is a normal process, especially for handmade rugs made from all-natural fibers like wool, and is common when a rug is new. These natural fiber rugs will initially shed loose fibers, but this shedding will subside within a few months of use. Regular vacuuming, using a good-quality upright vacuum cleaner with suction-only settings, helps remove the loose fibers and speeds up the process.

Protecting Your Rug

To prolong the life of your rug, use a high-quality rug pad to prevent slipping, provide cushioning, and reduce wear from foot traffic. Rotating your rug every 6-12 months helps prevent uneven wear and fading, while limiting sun exposure can protect it from discoloration—consider using curtains or periodically rotating the rug to minimize damage. Additionally, using furniture coasters under heavy furniture legs helps distribute weight evenly and avoid deep indentations, and rearranging furniture occasionally can prevent permanent marks.
